Momo's reputation preceded it; I'd been told by several people that they made good wings. Not Buffalo mind you, but fall-off-the-bone BBQ. So when I needed a place to catch up with a friend over wings and beer the U street sports bar seemed like a logical option. I got there a little after 9 on a Friday and things were quiet but just getting started. I ordered the smallest order, 10 wings, with a Stella and sat down to wait. There was no shortage of flat screen TVs tuned to sports of various sorts to keep me occupied until Miranda arrived. She told me she was "ignorant of wing topics" and "didn't know what to expect". All would be revealed.

Sipping beers and attempting to converse we couldn't avoid noticing how loud it was -- there was a table of women behind us that were, for lack of a better word, shrieking. A lot. We were both willing to write this off as standard Friday night bar atmosphere, but the manager came over unsolicited to apologize for the noise and offer us a round. Brownie points for sure, but How would the wings fare? The menu describes them as covered in a "sweet and tangy BBQ sauce". In addition to orders of 8 they come 20 for $14.99 and 50 for $28.99 if you're feeling ambitious. They're half price Mondays and Thursdays. If anyone manages to get 50 wings for 14.50 you let me know.

The wings came with blue cheese dressing and a small pile of carrots and celery. Biting into one it was clear that they were grilled, and equally clear that this presents some texture problems. The wings weren't very hot and the skin had lost any crispiness imparted by the fire. Some of them were distinctly slimy. It was a decent sweet, mild BBQ sauce, though Miranda said "I feel like something critical is missing". Probably a deep fryer and some Buffalo sauce. The chicken was nonetheless good quality and the wings were big and meaty, falling off the bone as promised. Overall Momo's doesn't stand out as a wings spot, but I have to give them credit for being such good sports.

Sounds like even though they were not your standard hot wings, you were very pleased with them. I was just at a place this weekend that had great wings, but the other food had a lot to be desired. Had I been there with my buddies drinking beer and eating the award winning wings instead of dining with my kids, I would have had a mucht better time. Some times you want beer and wings and other times you don't .
