Apparently Black Squirrels are uncommon in many areas outside of DC. I rarely see them, but that didn't stop me from joining a group of folks for a friend's graduation dinner at The Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan. I wouldn't miss an opportunity to support her, where by "support her" I mean "try the wings".

I got there late and had to catch up. They have an interesting variety of beers on order and a legit restaurant menu. Much as the namesake animal has an atypical hue for its species, the Black Squirrel tries to be a different color of Adams Morgan establishment. The menu offers fresh and local food, even wings that the waiter described as jumbo and the menu touts as "Twice Cooked... with our house made Siracha Sauce". He said that wings are sold by weight and as a result come 6 or 7 to an order. I asked for them extra crispy.

The wings were pretty good. They came in an adorable little cast iron skillet (see pic) with fresh carrot and celery chunks and an ample coating of spicy hot sauce. They were warm, though not very hot, and had a pleasantly complex flavor. And yet they didn't really impress me. Maybe it's the hint of pretension in the menu, but the Squirrel has fairly tasty wings that I'm just not nuts for.
