Wing Reports
Burgers "N" Things
Submitted by Michael on Sat, 12/05/2009 - 7:48pmIt's a little known fact that in addition to scenic views and family-owned wineries, the Shenandoah Valley is widely celebrated for its chicken wings. The reason it's a little known fact is because I just made it up. But having spent my birthday weekend with friends in a cabin near Shenandoah National Park, a stop for burgers and wings on the way back to DC seemed like just what we needed to take the edge off an impending Monday. Burgers "N" Things is purely a roadside takeout, and looking up at the menu board I found "wing dings" listed under "hot sandwiches", below the chili-cheese fries and just above the apple pie sticks. As usual when I sample wings off the beaten path I didn't know what to expect.
The Saloon
Submitted by Michael on Fri, 11/13/2009 - 4:26amWings aside (let's come back to those in a minute), as U street drinking destinations go The Saloon is kind of a strange bird. There's no television, no standing, and more than one credit card per table costs $2 each. Notes in the margins of the extensive beer menu border on pedantic. "If you do not like beer, other places may be a better place for you". No matter though, customer condescension has proved a successful formula in the past, and if the wings were good all would be forgiven.
Momo's Sports Bar
Submitted by Michael on Sat, 10/03/2009 - 6:06amMomo's reputation preceded it; I'd been told by several people that they made good wings. Not Buffalo mind you, but fall-off-the-bone BBQ. So when I needed a place to catch up with a friend over wings and beer the U street sports bar seemed like a logical option. I got there a little after 9 on a Friday and things were quiet but just getting started. I ordered the smallest order, 10 wings, with a Stella and sat down to wait. There was no shortage of flat screen TVs tuned to sports of various sorts to keep me occupied until Miranda arrived. She told me she was "ignorant of wing topics" and "didn't know what to expect". All would be revealed.
The Tombs
Submitted by Michael on Fri, 06/26/2009 - 4:55amIt's been a few days and I still feel vaguely guilty. A doctor's appointment earlier this week brought me to the Georgetown campus at lunch time. Seems innocent enough, but I came across The Tombs on my way back to the office, one thing led to another, and before I knew it I was at the perennial Georgetown hangout for a little afternoon delight. The reference to Clydes (below) is not incidental; I didn't know it at the time, but both locations are owned by the same folks. How would the wings compare?
Clydes of Georgetown
Submitted by Michael on Thu, 05/28/2009 - 4:11amFun Fact: The song Afternoon Delight, a 1976 number 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, was named after the late afternoon appetizer menu at Clyde's of Georgetown. I didn't know this, or really anything at about Clyde's, when I went for a coworker's sendoff happy hour one Wednesday after work. What I did know was that the delight of that particular afternoon would be chicken wings and beer.
Axis Bar and Grill
Submitted by Michael on Wed, 05/27/2009 - 4:07amIt's good to have a place like Axis in your neighborhood. Quality food in a casual but classy atmosphere and bartenders that at least pretend to be knowledgeable about beer. Their wings were some of the first I'd eaten after starting wingipedia. I liked them but didn't manage (read: "was too drunk") to write a review the first time around. So I went back for round two hoping that they'd be as good as I remembered.
Looking Glass Lounge
Submitted by Michael on Wed, 05/20/2009 - 4:02amPicture it: Tuesday night, working late, you get a call -- friends going out for wings. Do you take a pass citing work and an early day tomorrow, or do you shut off your monitor, get on your bike, and make it happen? I briefly considered the question and a half hour later walked into Looking Glass Lounge. I'd soon be glad I did.
The Black Squirrel
Submitted by Michael on Sun, 05/17/2009 - 2:20pmApparently Black Squirrels are uncommon in many areas outside of DC. I rarely see them, but that didn't stop me from joining a group of folks for a friend's graduation dinner at The Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan. I wouldn't miss an opportunity to support her, where by "support her" I mean "try the wings".
Carpool
Submitted by Michael on Sat, 05/16/2009 - 3:24pmA friend and I were walking around Ballston after seeing the Comedy Spot's Blue Show, when Carpool's bustling atmosphere and outdoor seating called to me. It's big place that reminded us both of a higher end Dr. Dremos but we went inside only to order wings, opting instead for one of their two patios to take in the Spring weather. It took me a second, but I got it. "Car" because the decor is automobile themed, and "pool" because there's pool tables. Clever.
Mackey's Public House
Submitted by Michael on Thu, 05/14/2009 - 3:02amPublic houses ('pubs' for short -- who knew?) have long been an integral part of the social fabric in Ireland and England. Less so in downtown DC, but I'm not one to let history or geography get in the way of another opportunity to try the wings. Our server Tim came by wearing a fun-o-meter pin that looked something like this, and I asked for for wings extra crispy and why the fun-o-meter was only registering about 70%. "This is about as fun as it gets."
